Rihanna Kissed Katy Perry Off the Chart
Apparently Katy Perry can only tied her record to The Beatles. This week, Perry’s “I Kissed A Girl” has just got beaten by “Disturbia” from Barbados beauty, Rihanna, and officially ended Perry’s seven-week chart-topping streak. Disturbia is disturbing for Perry alright.
Rihanna’s latest single made the two-spot jump to No. 1 after selling a week-best 148,000 digital downloads. And that’s not all RiRi achieved. Her previous chart-topper “Take a Bow” also remains atop the Hot 100 Airplay chart, which is quite rare if an artist simultaneously dominates the regular Hot 100 and the Hot 100 Airplay chart with different tracks.
Perry was the first female singer crowned the top spot for seven straight weeks since, ironically, Rihanna did it last summer with super smash hit “Umbrella.” And after Rihanna released a ‘Reloaded’ version of her “Good Girl Gone Bad” album last June, Umbrella’s successfulness followed by her other added tracks, “Take a Bow” and “Disturbia”.
As happens with bonus tracks on deluxe or updated editions of the artist’s album, fans often buy the individual tracks instead of the new version and this helps drive an artist’s digital track sales.
Overall, Rihanna has scored four No. 1 hits, since her “SOS” track, taken from the “A Girl Like Me” album in 2006. Making her secured in tied position with BeyoncĂ© and Mariah Carey for the decade’s most chart-toppers by a female artist.
Runner-up on the chart is Rihanna’s ‘very close friend’, Chris Brown, with his groovy song “Forever”. While Katy Perry fell two spots to No. 3, ouch! Another outstanding achievement is “Paper Planes” from M.I.A, who jumps 11 spot, thanks to digital sales following its use in the “Pineapple Express”" trailer.
RiRi, love your Disturbia! Stay on top girl!
