Singer Janet Jackson has ended her relationship with her label, Island Records, as announced by the singer’s publicist yesterday (9/22).

Jackson was signed to Island Records in July 2007, and after about 14 months, the younger sister of ‘King of Pop’, Janet Jackson and Island Def Jam have agreed to part ways at the artist’s request. Miss Janet is reportedly dissatisfied with the promotion of her latest album “Discipline”, which reached number #1 last February, but sold just 415,000 albums to date.

In a statement released by her rep, “At her request, the record label has agreed to dissolve their working relationship. Now more than 20 years after the release of her iconic album, Control, Janet will have autonomy over her career, without the restrictions of a label system.” While a rep for Island Records had no comment.

42-year-old Jackson first discussed her dissapoinment to the label in June, when she got interviewed on a hip-hop website. She was saying, “I’m trying to figure out a way to say this, but just to say it and to be quite honest, they just stopped all promotion whatsoever on the album, so I don’t think you’re going to hear another single off this album”.

At the time, an Island Def Jam spokesperson responded, “Unfortunately, we haven’t experienced the results we would have liked with this new album. But we respect and support Janet”.

Although time is tough for Janet, and she had to experience a sad break up, but she’s a strong woman, and a professional performer. Jackson will continue to perform her “Rock Witchu” tour across North America. Keep the spirit up Miss J, we support you!
