Steven Spielberg and His Wife
Brad Pitt had made a good example, and apparently his donating act last week had encouraged other celebs to do the same thing.
Hollywood’s famous director, Steven Spielberg and his wife, actress Kate Capshaw had donated $100,000 to help fight California’s Proposition 8, the ballot initiative that would ban gay marriage in the state. They’re following Brad Pitt’s footsteps to help bankroll activists, aiming to defeat a proposed gay marriage ban that will be voted on during November 4 elections.
On Tuesday, the couple announcing that the money goes to the No-on-8 campaign, and giving out statement saying, “By writing discrimination into our state constitution, Proposition 8 seeks to eliminate the right of each and every citizen in our state to marry regardless of sexual orientation. Such discrimination has NO place in California’s constitution, or any other.” Spielberg’s spokesman Marvin Levy later confirmed, “Obviously, he’s hopeful that this proposition can be defeated, and that everyone has the same rights”.
Until now, California and Massachusetts are the only two US states where same-sex marriage is legal, a decision that was reached in May, following a California Supreme Court ruling that overturned a previous ban on gay weddings.
However opponents of same-sex marriage lobbied successfully to have a measure that would reinstate the ban placed on the ballot when Californians go to the polls to vote in presidential elections. Recent opinion polls indicate Californians are likely to reject the bid.
Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and Senator Barack Obama are two strong names among those who against Proposition 8. There are two high profile gay marriages already, since the ruling became effective. Talkshow host Ellen DeGeneres became the pioneer last month, marrying actress Portia de Rossi, while “Star Trek” star George Takei took a bold step last week to finally tied the knot with his longtime partner Brad Altman.
Hopefully good results will came from all the good intentions (and donations). Got my finger crossed!
