Oscar-winning actress Charlize Theron has a new role. Not in a movie, but a special role in life.

On Friday, 33-year-old Theron has been appointed as a United Nations messenger of peace by the U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, as said by UN spokesman Farhan Haq. Haq also said, this new responsibilities came with a special focus, that is a goal on ending violence against women.

Theron will join the nine other UN messengers of peace, they are; American actors George Clooney and Michael Douglas, musicians Daniel Barenboim, Midori Goto and Yo-Yo Ma, authors Paulo Coelho and Elie Wiesel, equestrian Princess Haya Bint al-Hussein of Jordan and naturalist Jane Goodall.

Messengers of peace, are celebrities mainly from the fields of film, music, literature and sport who are charged with promoting U.N. activities and ideals through public appearances and media contacts. The Secretary General giving out statement on designating the South African-born actress a messenger of peace, “You have used your voice, compassion and special relationship with the public to create a better world.” She will be formally inducted on Monday at the United Nations headquarters in New York.

Theron is a phenomenal actress who became a naturalized US citizen in 2007. She won an Academy Award for her role in the 2003 movie entitled Monster, in which she played serial killer Aileen Wuornos, who came from a background of violence and abuse and was executed in Florida in 2002. She also starred in North Country, back in 2005, where she played a woman who fights back against sexual harassment. Her several other movies are The Cider House Rules, The Italian Job, and AEon Flux.

Not only an outstanding actress, Theron is also an activist. She founded the Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project with the goal of promoting HIV/AIDS education for impoverished children and their families in South Africa. She has also been involved in charitable causes such as putting mobile health clinics in rural areas of her native South Africa where access to care is limited.

A gorgeous face that goes with an even more beautiful heart. Congrats, Charlize!
