Kanye West, Rihanna and Alicia Keys Are Multiple Winners in the American Music Awards

Alongside Brown who had his victory night, his ‘very close friend’, Rihanna, also won Favorite Female Artist in Soul/R&B and Pop/Rock categories, beating Alicia Keys in both races. Keys actually led with five nominations, but ended up with a pair of trophies; favorite album in the soul/R&B and pop/rock categories for her As I Am album. Other multiple winners included rapper Kanye West. West was named favorite male rap/hip-hop artist and his CD, Graduation, won favorite rap/hip-hop album.

From the country field, the cute Taylor Swift had her first award from AMA. The 18-year-old singer was named favorite female country singer. While Brad Paisley hold the title for Male Category. For the second year, winners were determined by online voting. They used to be decided by a poll of 20,000 music buyers, but producers decided to make the event more inclusive in the wake of slumping ratings. The move seemed to work, with last year’s show attracting 11.8 million viewers, up from 10.9 million the year before.

The event brings out some spectacular perfomances, such as Rihanna who wore chains and a leather corset to perform her newest single, Rehab. And there’s also performance by Miley Cyrus, Ne-Yo and Beyoncé. Christina Aguilera channeled Madonna and the New Kids on the Block channeled an earlier version of themselves as each sang their latest singles and greatest hits. Also performing were The Jonas Brothers, the Pussycat Dolls, Coldplay and Annie Lennox, who won the Award of Merit.

A performance by Eurythmics singer Annie Lennox, earned her a standing ovation with a heartfelt piano ballad Why. Last night, Lennox received a lifetime achievement award. As she accepted the trophy from Justin Timberlake, the rocker said, “I never thought that I would live to see the day that I would be 53 years old standing on the stage.”
