Shocking news coming from Braveheart actor, Mel Gibson.

His wife of 28 years filed for divorce Monday, citing irreconcilable differences. 53-year-old Robyn Moore filed the petition in Los Angeles Superior Court, with no details of the separation.

Then later, the couple released a joint statement saying, “Throughout our marriage and separation we have always strived to maintain the privacy and integrity of our family and will continue to do so.”

Gibson, also 53, and Moore met in Australia (Gibson moved there when he was 12), when he was an unknown actor and his future wife was working as a dental assistant. They got married in June 1980 and now had seven children together; Hannah, 28, twins Edward and Christian, 26, William, 24, Louis, 21, Milo, 19, and Thomas, 9.

According to court papers, Moore is seeking joint physical and legal custody over their minor child, Thomas, who will celebrate his tenth birthday on Tuesday. She is also seeking spousal support and attorney’s fees, and is asking the court to deny her husband any spousal support.

Not only that, Moore is demanding more. She is seeking jewelry and earnings and assets she accrued after the couple separated, and a share of the money and assets that Gibson has earned during his nearly three decades as an actor.

But the actor/director also filed a response to the divorce within four hours of his wife’s filing. He stated that the two had been separated since August 26, 2006, and also cites irreconcilable differences as the reason for the split. The document showed that Gibson does not want to pay Robyn Moore spousal support and is seeking that attorneys’ fees be paid out of the couple’s joint property.

An insider commented on the divorce, saying, “They’ll do this amicably. There’s a lot of mutual respect and they’ve worked hard on their marriage and worked hard on their separation. They’ll handle the divorce in the same respectful way.”

We feel sorry for the sad news too, Mr. Gibson. Be strong!
