Chris Brown Pleaded Guilty

R&B singer Chris Brown has pleaded guilty on Monday to assaulting his former girlfriend Rihanna, but instead spending his time in jail, Brown got five years of probation and have to attend courses on domestic violence. He will also be sentenced to 180 days of community service for the attack.

He had actually faced four years in prison if convicted in a trial on charges of assault and a making a criminal threat, but he got some pretty good attorneys behind him (one of them is high-profile defense lawyer Mark Geragos). Brown’s lawyers announced the deal as the singer appeared in Los Angeles Superior Court for a preliminary hearing into the case. The plea deal managed to give Brown an escape from jail time, but there was no plea deal on a second charge. The Kiss Kiss singer will be formally sentenced August 5.

Beside the probation, attend courses and community service, Brown was also ordered to keep his distance from 21-year-old Rihanna, who was in the courthouse and prepared to testify against him. After Brown left the courtroom, the Umbrella singer entered and was addressed by Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Patricia Schnegg, who explained that she had issued a stay-away order, although Rihanna had not been seeking such an order.

The order requires that the former couple stay at least 50 yards from each, except at industry events when the distance is reduced to 10 yards. Judge Schnegg also told Rihanna it’s not a one-way order — and that she, too, shouldn’t get any closer to Brown than the order allows.

After the hearing, Brown’s lawyer Mark Geragos said, “This is a kid who’s never been in trouble before. He embraces this as chance to get the message out that domestic violence will not be tolerated. He wants to get his life back on track.” On the other side, Rihanna’s attorney told reporters, “Rihanna believes that this is a fair and just resolution to this case. She’s feeling fine. She understood what was happening in court. She did not object to the plea by Chris.”

Best wishes for both, and be diligent on your community service duties, alright Chris?!
