Michael Jackson Memorial in LA (sfgate.com)
Michael Jackson’s memorial service is an awesome event, and proved to be one of the most-watched events on television.
According to Nielsen Media Research, over 31 million people in the United States watched the Michael Jackson memorial on television. It’s a bit smaller audience than for Princess Diana’s funeral or President Barack Obama’s inauguration, but undoubtedly reached an impressive number of audience in today’s TV world.
President Obama’s inauguration in January had an audience of nearly 38 million, while 33.2 million people in the U.S. watched Princess Diana’s funeral in 1997. Last Tuesday’s Jackson memorial was carried live on some 18 different networks, including all the big broadcasters and cable news stations.
Not only in the U.S., millions watched video streams on their computers, and it was broadcasted all over the world. Well, not only he was King of Pop, Michael Jackson was also King of Today’s Television.

The service for Michael Jackson was a great event it mixed sorrow and emotion with hope and a positive perspective on the life of the king of pop. Michaels brothers and family were strong yet they showed appropriate emotion. His daughter Paris left me in tears as did the songs by Loniel Ritchie and Stevie Wonder. I even managed to laugh when Magic Johnson and Brooke Shields spoke about there friend. With all the negitive stories and coverage about Michael this was refreshing, it was also a sobering reminder that this is real. For some reason up until the time I saw his gold coffin I guess I hoped it was a hoax or somehow he would emerge still alive. As a lifelong fan I have stood in Michaels corner all these years and will continue to gaurd his legacy as the greatest entertainer who ever lived. I just hope people will remember his contribution to music and video. He was not perfect but he is not the monster the media tried to make him out to be. The main thing is he was a great father who was loved by his children and his family loved him and so did his fans. I know that the world will miss Michael Jackson. rest in peace and long live the king.
