On Monday, Chris Brown publicly apologized for the assault incident of his then-girlfriend Rihanna in a video. The Forever singer describing his loss of control as “unacceptable, 100 percent” and asking for forgiveness from his fans. He also said that he had wanted to speak out earlier but had been advised against it by his lawyers.

In a two-minute video statement, Brown was heard saying, “I wish I had the chance to live those few moments again, but unfortunately I can’t. I’m not going to sit here and make any excuses. What I did was inexcusable.” He continued, “I have told Rihanna countless times, and I’m telling you today, that I am truly, truly sorry that I wasn’t able to handle the situation differently and better.”

He also added, “I am very sad and very ashamed of what I’ve done. As many of you know, I grew up in a home where there was domestic violence, and I saw first-hand what uncontrolled rage could do. I have sought and I am continuing to seek help to ensure that what occurred in February can never happen again … What I did was unacceptable, 100 percent. I can only ask and pray that you forgive me, please.”

The 20-year-old singer was arrested February 8, hours after he and the Umbrella singer fought on the way to coming home from a pre-Grammy party. According to a police affidavit, Brown tried to push the 21-year-old singer from the car, repeatedly hit her and choked her, which left Rihanna’s face bloodied and bruised.

Brown escaped a jail sentence after a plea deal with prosecutors over the assault, but will be sentenced to 180 days of community service next month, and he is due to be formally sentenced on August 5. Brown concluded his video message, saying, “I intend to live my life so that I am truly worth of the term ‘role model.’”

Hopefully Chris Brown is a man of his words, and the incident made him learn from his mistakes.
