Amy Winehouse must be singing the happy song right now, because she won’t be worried anymore about the assault case that was being accused to her.
25-year-old Winehouse was cleared Friday of assaulting a female fan who asked her for a picture September last year at a charity ball. She had denied the accusation of deliberately punching dancer Sherene Flash in the face backstage at the Prince’s Trust Ball in Berkeley Square, central London.
Lucky for Winehouse, district judge Timothy Workman said there was not enough evidence to convict her. As the judge said in front of the City of Westminster Magistrates’ Court, “Having heard the evidence from all the witnesses, I cannot be sure that this was not an accident. The charge is dismissed and the defendant discharged. The charge is dismissed and the defendant discharged.”
The Rehab singer initially looked confused as the verdict was read out, until her lawyer clarified the ruling to her. On her way out of the courtroom, she told reporters, “I’m relieved. I’m going home.”
During the two-day trial, the singer said she was willing to fulfill Flash’s request to take a picture with her at first, but then had been intimidated by Flash when she put her arm around her. She pushed Flash away, while Flash said the singer punched her. Fortunately for Winehouse, none of the other witnesses giving evidence said they saw the singer throw the punch.
Winehouse’s lawyer Patrick Gibbs explained to the court why the singer had felt threatened, “Five foot seven in burlesque heels places you at quite an advantage over five foot two in ballet pumps.” Then, outside the court, a spokesman for the singer said, “Amy would like to thank her family, friends and legal team for their support during this difficult time. She’s always maintained her innocence and is very happy to move on with her life and put the episode behind her.”
Congrats for the ‘freedom’, Amy!
