G.I. Joe Sits at the Top of This Week’s Box Office

G.I. Joe
Wizards were beaten by Soldiers this week. At least, that’s what happened to Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince‘s three-week reign that was knocked down from the No. 1 throne by G.I. Joe.
According to studio estimates Sunday, the action movie that was inspired by the Hasbro action figure, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, took home $56.2 million from its debut domestically and ranks as the fourth-highest August opening ever. It sold about $100.3 million worth of tickets, and also took in $44.3 million overseas for a worldwide total of $100.5 million.
The $175 million movie that was directed by Stephen Sommers has stars like Channing Tatum, Sienna Miller, Marlon Wayans, Dennis Quaid and Joseph Gordon-Levitt as the Joes and the villains. It drew $5.6 million in South Korea, as well as No. 1 rankings in both China ($4.8 million) and Russia ($4.6 million). France chipped in $3.3 million, the U.K. $2.9 million, and Japan $2.4 million.
Paul Dergarabedian, a box-office analyst for Hollywood.com said about the movie, “‘Joe’ kind of saved the day. We needed a box-office hero to turn things around, and we certainly got it.”
