They might be Basterds, but they definitely gloriously sitting at the top of box office.

Quentin Tarantino’s World War II movie, Inglourious Basterds, has become the director’s best opening ever, with a $37.6 million debut last week, exceeding the $25.1 million haul for 2004’s Kill Bill — Vol. 2. It also added $27.5 million in 22 countries overseas, giving it a worldwide total of $65.1 million.

The movie that was released domestically by the Weinstein Co. and overseas by Universal, has stars like Brad Pitt and Diane Kruger, where Pitt’s character is a leader of American Jewish commandos who staging a plot to take out Nazi leaders at a movie premiere during World War II.

With Tarantino’s project steal the top spot, the previous weekend’s top movie, Sony’s sci-fi thriller District 9, slipped to second-place with $18.9 million. It succeeded a domestic total of $73.5 million, and is on its way to becoming a $100 million sleeper hit. Meanwhile, a Warner Bros. family comedy directed by Robert Rodriguez, entitled Shorts, was debuted at No. 6 with just $6.6 million. Not such a great achievement for Rodriguez who was Tarantino’s partner in Grindhouse.

New on the list is Fox Atomic’s comedy called Post Grad, starred Alexis Bledel as a college graduate who moves back home with her eccentric family after she’s unable to land her dream job. The movie closing up the list with $2.8 million. Here is the Top Ten Box Office movies last weekend, where final figures will be released later today.

    Tarentino is very twisted, but that is what makes him famous.
