Katherine Heigl is Taking a Break from Grey’s Anatomy

Just when new faces enroll in Seattle Grace, a familiar face is taking a leave of absence.
It is Katherine Heigl a.k.a. Dr. Izzie Stevens who will have a hiatus from Grey’s Anatomy. Sources had confirmed that Heigl is taking a five-episode hiatus from the ABC drama to go shoot the Greg Berlanti-directed romantic comedy Life as We Know It.
Rep from the network cannot confirm the exact length of time she will be out of pocket, but confirmed the news by saying, “Katherine is taking time off to film a movie. The producers at Grey’s have accommodated past things like that before. It’s a cast of 13 and it is a true ensemble so the show is mindful [of other commitments].”
Other sources informed that Heigl’s departure is set to begin this month, last into November and will be explained on screen. Heigl’s temporary hiatus also close enough with Ellen Pompeo’s upcoming maternity leave. Pompeo, who plays the main character Dr. Meredith Grey, is due to give birth to her first child in October.
The mastermind of Grey’s Anatomy, Shonda Rhimes once said, “Eventually, everybody is going to leave the show,” not long after the departure of T.R. Knight. She continued, “So we’re looking at [ways] we can mess with the structure now…. Season 6 is about finding the longevity of the show and figuring out if there is a future for this show beyond these characters.”
Well, because two main characters will be absent from the show, the story in this season of Grey’s Anatomy is overwhelmingly defined by the merger of Seattle Grace and crosstown rival Mercy West. Seattle Grace is about to double in size, bringing in a slate of new doctors and paving the way for major shake-ups in the season to come.
One of the results of the merger is that Izzie will be fired, while Meredith will fade into the background while new doctors, administrators and nurses fill in the gaps of those favorite residents leave behind. Not only Nora Zehetner, new faces of Robert Baker and Jesse Williams will also joining this sixth season of Grey’s Anatomy.
