Following his funeral last Thursday, the King of Pop’s former bejeweled white glove also got itself an awesome price.
The white glove that was worn by the late superstar and then tossed to an Australian fan more than a decade ago, sold at auction Sunday for 57,600 Australian dollars (or $48,400), almost twice the estimated selling price, the auction house said. It was one of his trademark, and according to auction house Bonhams and Goodman this was the first Jackson glove to go on sale since he died in June at the age of 50.
After a bidding war between collectors in Australia and the United States, it was bought by Warwick Stone on behalf of the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. Charlotte Stanes, spokeswoman for the Melbourne auction house Bonhams and Goodman, informed that Stone beat out five other bidders. The estimated selling price before the auction was AU$30,000.
Stanes said about the auction, “We are very happy with the result. It’s the first glove we know about in Australia.” She also added, “There was a huge amount of interest in the week leading up to the sale. We were still pretty surprised by the price.”
The glove brought back memories in November 1996, when Jackson was in Sydney during the HIStory tour. While in Sydney, he attended a premiere in Sydney of the film Ghosts, in which he starred. Earlier the same day, the singer had married Debbie Rowe, who is now the mother of his two elder children. At the end of the screening, he tossed the glove at audience member Bill Hibble, who has since died, said national head of collectibles Giles Moon.
Well, for the sake of MJ’s memories, it’s worth every penny!
