Stephen Gately Died of Natural Causes

The death of Boyzone member, Stephen Gately, was a shock to his family, friends, loved ones and also fans.

According to autopsy results released Tuesday, Gately died of natural causes. A court spokeswoman on the Spanish island of Majorca detailed that the singer died due of acute pulmonary edema, or fluid in the lungs, and that there were no signs of violence in his death. Apparently, although the reason behind his death is already clear, it’s still shocking anyway.

Pulmonary edema, or water on the lungs, can be a result to either the failure of the heart to remove fluid from the lungs or direct damage to the lung tissue.

His body is now at a chapel of rest in the Majorcan town of Calvia. It has been authorized by a judge that his body will be flown to Dublin on Friday.

Gately rose to fame together with four other bandmates; Ronan Keating, Keith Duffy, Mikey Graham and Shane Lynch through Boyzone. A decade ago, Gately announced he was gay. And then in 2006, Gately married his partner Andrew Cowles in a civil union in London.

The soft-voiced singer was found dead on Saturday in his apartment in the Majorcan town of Port Andratx while on holiday on the Mediterranean island. He was 33. In a statement released on the band’s website, other Boyzone members wrote: “We are completely devastated by the loss of our friend and brother, Stephen. We have shared such wonderful times together over the years and were all looking forward to sharing many more. Stephen was a beautiful person in both body and spirit. He it up our lives and those of the many friends he had all over the world. Our love and sympathy go out to Andrew and Stephen’s family. We will love you and will miss you forever, ‘Steo.’”
