Johnny Depp is People’s Sexiest Man Alive

From a teen idol of a police squad 21 Jump Street, to an eccentric chocolate factory owner, to a witty treacherous captain of a pirate ship, to a ruthless English barber, Johnny Depp is indeed the Sexiest Man Alive. At least that is what People Magazine editors had in mind when they awarded Depp 2009 Sexiest Man Alive on Wednesday.

Depp won the same award in 2003. It meant he joined Brad Pitt (Sexiest Man Alive in 1995 and 2000) and George Clooney (Sexiest Man Alive in 1997 and 2006) as two-time winners of the title.

It was quite a surprise. People’s sexiest men are usually those who had spent a year in the public spotlight due to major movie releases. Despite his low profile in 2009, Depp nudged Hugh Jackman aside.

People editors considered Twilight star Robert Pattinson for the award, but decided to go with the 46-year-old father of two (unmarried though) for longevity that has withstood the test of time.

“He arrived at his new, happy place without selling out, without becoming slick or packaged or politically correct, he is a hero to his fans and an idol to his young co-stars,” People said.

Depp has just signed to the fourth installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, On Stranger Tides.
