“After much prayer and months of careful thought, I have decided that next season, season 25, will be the last season of The Oprah Winfrey Show,” Oprah Winfrey told her studio audience in Chicago.

Renowned as a host of highly influential The Oprah Winfrey Show for 25 years, Oprah decided to end the show at its 25th season. Though Oprah had mentioned that plan in a 2007 interview with Larry King, her announcement would not be able to evade the disappointment emerged among fans.

The 55-year-old said she was beyond excited when her show aired for the first time in September 1986. Yet, “I certainly never could have imagined the ‘yellow brick road’ of blessings that have led me to this moment with you,” she said.

“You have all invited me into your lives,” she goes on. “We’ve grown together. I want you all to know that my relationship with you is one that I hold very dear. Your trust in me, your sharing your precious time with me . . . has brought me theh greatest joy that I have ever known.”

But, why would she end the show which has been acknowledged by Time as the best television series of the 20th century in 1998?

“Twenty-five years feels right in my bones and it feels right in my spirit. It’s the perfect number—the exact right time,” she said.

A multibillionaire today, Oprah did not address her next move. She only hoped that people would continue to watch the next 18 months run to the end. “We are going to knock your socks off. I intend to soak up every meaningful, joy-filled moment with you,” she promised.

Even if her mostly female fans round the globe may shed their tears, Oprah made her decision already. “Thanks, everybody. And I’ll see you on Monday.”

The Oprah Winfrey Show airs on most CBS- and ABC-owned stations in the United States, CTV in Canada and Diva TV in the United Kingdom until its last run, on September 9, 2011.
