Roman Polanski Has Got All Luxuries in the Prison?

Roman Polanski has got all the luxuries in the prison. He was allowed regular calls to his wife, French actress Emmanuelle Seigner, and his attorneys. Prison guards also kept the safety of the 76-year-old director by keeping him away from other inmates. His cell phone was equipped with an emergency button to summon guards, in case he ever needed something. Those are what Yussi Akram, Polanski’s inmate, told Zurich’s Radio One.

While The Associated Press reported that those were Polanski’s rights as an extradition detainee. He afforded more privileges than prisoners committing crimes on Swiss soil.

Director Janusz Morgensten, Polanski’s best friend, told Radio One that Polanski has suffered from depression. He has lost 30 pounds.

“His fear of the U.S. verges on panic, and he has lived with that fear for so long that it’s become obsessive,” Morgensten said. The depression might have also been caused by his kids withdrawal from the school, after they had been taunted by their peers.

Roman Polanski is one of the most controversial contomporary figures in cinema history. He is a director, a producer, a writer and an actor as well. He was accused of raping the 13-year-old Samantha Geimer during a photo shoot in 1977 after giving her champagne and a sedative. He was pleaded guilty of unlawful sexual intercourse and has been in the Swiss prison for two months after his arrest on a warrant.

Polanski would be released from prison in Monday, as the Swiss justice ministry told BBC, after he had pledged $4.5 million in bail and agreed to electronic monitoring.
