Murphy was born in Atlanta on November 10, 1977, and raised in New Jersey. Accompanied by her mother, she moved to Los Angeles in the early 1990s in hopes of stardom. She began her career at age nine on Broadway in Les Miserables, and went on to several short-lived television gigs before landing her role as one of Alicia Silverstone’s girlfriends, Tai, in 1995’s hit comedy, Clueless.
She would later known for her roles in Drop Dead Gorgeous, Girl, Interrupted, Don’t Say a Word, 8 Mile alongside Eminem, and Sin City. Murphy also gained media attention when she dated costar Ashton Kutcher in 2002 during and after their film, Just Married.

She recently finished work on the Sylvester Stallone action film The Expendables, set for release next year.
Before marrying Monjack in 2007, she was engaged to former agent Jeff Kwatinetz, then also engaged to Little Black Book production assistant, Joe Macaluso. Responding to the shocking death, a rep for the star’s family said, “In this time of sadness, the family thanks you for your love and support. It is their wish that you respect their privacy.”
While former boyfriend Ashton Kutcher immediately Twittered, “2day the world lost a little piece of sunshine. My deepest condolences go out 2 Brittany’s family, her husband, & her amazing mother, Sharon. See you on the other side kid.”
