Golden Globe

Let’s celebrate!

This year’s Golden Globe is definitely a time to celebrate. James Cameron and Avatar, Sandra Bullock, the cast of Glee, and lots of others are among the names who deserve a celebration for their winning.

The science-fiction blockbuster Avatar, won best drama at the Golden Globes, as well as picked up the directing honor for James Cameron. That’s just like what happened 12 years ago, when Titanic won best drama and Cameron won the best director award. Looks like a very bright chance to win the Oscars is heading Cameron’s way.

While accepting the award, Cameron encouraged his fellow Hollywood filmmakers, “We have the best job in the world, we really do. I just want you to give it up for yourself. What we do is, we make entertainment for a global audience, and that’s what the Golden Globes mean. Give it up for yourselves.” He also praised ex-wife Kathryn Bigelow, who’s nominated in the same category for The Hurt Locker. He said, “Frankly, I thought Kathryn was going to get this. She richly deserves it.”

America’s sweetheart, Sandra Bullock grabbed the Best Actress in a Motion Picture, Drama award for the true-story inspired drama, The Blind Side. She cited Michael Oher, the Baltimore Ravens rookie lineman whose life is the subject of the movie. She plays a wealthy woman whose family took in the teenage Oher after discovering he was homeless. “If I may steal from Michael Oher, I may not be the most talented, but I’ve been given opportunity,” Bullock said.

Next, Best Actor in Drama goes to Jeff Bridges for the country-music story Crazy Heart. The acting prizes for musical and comedy went to Meryl Streep for the Julia Child story, Julie & Julia, and Robert Downey Jr. for the detective flick, Sherlock Holmes. The supporting-performance actor won by Christoph Waltz as a crazy Nazi in Inglourious Basterds.

Mo’Nique grabbed the Globe for Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture, thanks to her portrayal of an abusive mom in Precious: Based on the Novel “Push” by Sapphire. She gave a touching acceptance speech, reaching out to abuse victims, “First, let me say, thank you, God, for this amazing ride that you’re allowing me to go on. I celebrate this award with all the Preciouses and the Marys, with all the people who’ve ever been touched…It’s now time to tell, and it’s OK.”

The Hangover won for best musical or comedy, bringing uncharacteristic awards attention for broad comedy, a genre that often gets overlooked at Hollywood honors. In his acceptance speech, director Todd Phillips said, “I just want to thank my mom, who supported my decision to become a director when she realized I wasn’t as smart as my two sisters.

From the silver screen, Mad Men, Dexter and Glee were among the winners. Mad Men won for best TV drama, while Dexter gave Michael C. Hall the best actor in a TV drama award and the supporting-actor TV honor for John Lithgow. Other TV winners included Juliana Margulies as best actress in a drama for The Good Wife and Toni Collette as best comedy actress for The United States of Tara.

Glee, the newcomer in its first season beat out last year’s champ, 30 Rock, as the Best Television Series, Comedy or Musical. Creator Ryan Murphy said about the winning, “This is for anybody and everybody who ever got a wedgie in high school.”

Congratulations to all winners! Here’s the complete list:
